The Great American Smokeout

On the third Thursday in November smokers across the nation take part in The Great American Smokeout by smoking less or quitting for the day. The event helps make people aware of the many tools they can use to quit for good. Research shows smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have some means of support, such as encouragement from friends/family, medication, and counseling. The Arizona Smokers' Helpline (ASHLine) offers free telephone and Web-based quit services to all Arizonans.

Arizona Ranks 9th in State Cigarette Taxes

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has released a new map and rankings of state taxes on tobacco as of July 1, 2009. Arizona ranks 9th nationally for our tax on cigarettes. So far this year, 10 states (AR, FL, HI, KY, MS, NH, NJ, RI, VT, WI) have passed cigarette tax increases, five of which go into effect today. Significantly lower cigarette taxes in surrounding states and Mexico has already lead to trafficking, cutting into Arizona tax revenues.

FDA Begins New Oversight of Tobacco Products

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, legislation recently signed into law by President Obama, gives the FDA power to ban candy-flavored and fruit-flavored cigarettes, widely considered appealing to first-time smokers, including youth. It also prohibits tobacco companies from using terms such as low tar, light or mild, requires larger warning labels on packages, and restricts advertising of tobacco products.
